How to Choose the Right Motorcycle Windshield Height for Touring
The wrong windshield height causes buffeting, fatigue, and even neck pain on long rides. Here is how to choose the right height for your height, your bike, and your riding style.

Why windshield height matters
A windshield does two things: redirects airflow over your head and protects you from rain, wind chill, and debris. The height determines where the redirected air goes. Too short, and the air hits you in the chest and face. Too tall, and you get turbulence at helmet level that causes buffeting — the rapid back-and-forth shaking of your head that is exhausting over a long day.
Buffeting is worse than no windshield at all. A steady airflow is manageable; a turbulent airflow fatigues your neck, makes your visor vibrate, and can cause headaches over hours of riding. The right windshield height eliminates buffeting by directing clean air over your helmet.
The line-of-sight rule
The general rule: when sitting on the bike in your normal riding position, you should be looking over the top of the windshield, not through it. The top edge of the windshield should be at or just below your eye line. This means:
- If you look over the windshield: You have an unobstructed view of the road. Air is directed over your helmet. This is the correct position for most touring.
- If you look through the windshield: The windshield is too tall. You lose direct vision of the road (dangerous in rain when the windshield is wet). You also get turbulence at eye level because the airflow separates at the top edge right in front of your face.
- If the windshield is below your chin: It is too short. Air hits your face. This is fine for warm weather around town but fatiguing on a long highway ride.
Short vs tall windshields: the trade-off

How to measure for your height
- Sit on the bike in your normal riding position (feet on pegs, hands on bars)
- Have someone measure from the ground to your eye line
- The top of the windshield should be 5-10 cm (2-4 in) below your eye line
- This gives you clear vision over the top while directing airflow above your helmet
If you cannot test before buying, look for windshields listed with a specific height above stock. A "+5 cm" windshield is 5 cm taller than the OEM part. Start with +5 to +8 cm over stock for touring.
Materials: acrylic vs polycarbonate
- Acrylic: Less expensive, more rigid, but cracks on impact. Scratches cannot be polished out easily. Most OEM windshields are acrylic.
- Polycarbonate: More expensive, impact-resistant (will not crack), can be polished if scratched. Higher quality, longer lasting. Look for brands like Windbender and Slipstreamer.
- Tinted vs clear: Tinted reduces glare but reduces visibility at night. For touring, clear is safer — you ride at night and in varying conditions.
Common mistakes
- Buying too tall: The most common mistake. A windshield that you look through is dangerous in rain and creates turbulence at eye level. When in doubt, go shorter.
- Ignoring helmet height: Different helmets have different profiles. A tall touring helmet needs a taller windshield; a low-profile sport helmet needs a shorter one.
- Not testing at speed: A windshield that feels fine at 60 km/h (37 mph) may buffet at 110 km/h (68 mph). Test at your cruising speed before committing.
- Assuming one size fits all: A windshield that works for a 180 cm (5'11") rider will not work for a 168 cm (5'6") rider. Choose based on your height and riding position, not the bike model alone.
