King of the Baggers COTA 2026 Preview: Indian's Title to Lose
Two rounds, four races, 100 points left. Hayden Gillim and Troy Herfoss hold a 1-2 lock on the championship for Indian Motorcycle. Harley-Davidson's last realistic shot at keeping the 2026 title alive starts at Circuit of the Americas on September 11.

Championship Standings After Round 5
Five rounds into the 2026 Mission King of the Baggers season, the championship picture is clear: this is Indian's title to lose. Hayden Gillim leads with 206 points, with teammate Troy Herfoss second on 183. The Indian duo has combined for five race wins in the last six races, including two 1-2 sweeps at Road Atlanta and Mid-Ohio.
Harley-Davidson's factory team of Bradley Smith (152) and Kyle Wyman (126) are running out of rounds. Smith is 54 points behind Gillim — a gap that requires near-perfect results and an Indian misstep to close.

COTA: The Track
Circuit of the Americas is unlike any other track on the KOTB calendar. At 3.41 miles (5.51 km) with 20 turns, it is the longest circuit the baggers race on. The counterclockwise layout follows the natural elevation of the Texas Hill Country, with the signature feature being the 133-foot (40.5 m) climb from the start/finish line into Turn 1 — one of the steepest elevation changes in American road racing.
For the baggers — heavy, torque-heavy V-twins designed for the street, not the racetrack — COTA's long straights and big braking zones create a unique challenge. The uphill run to Turn 1 is blind at the apex, meaning riders must commit to their braking point before they can see the corner. Get it wrong and you run wide into the gravel. Get it right and you have the best passing opportunity on the circuit.
Turns 11 and 12 are the other major overtaking zones. Turn 11 is a tight hairpin at the end of a long back straight, requiring heavy braking from high speed. Turn 12 feeds onto another straight and rewards riders who can carry momentum through the exit.
COTA is the only circuit in the United States to host both Formula 1 and MotoGP, and the facility is built to world-class standards. The paddock is open to fans, giving spectators up-close access to the bikes and teams between sessions.
King of the Baggers at COTA — History
COTA has been kind to Kyle Wyman. The 2025 King of the Baggers champion clinched his title at this very circuit, with seven wins and three additional podiums across the 2025 season. Wyman also earned pole position at COTA in 2025 with a 1:27.922 lap aboard his Harley-Davidson Road Glide — the fastest KOTB qualifying lap ever recorded at the track.
In 2025, Troy Herfoss won Race 1 and Wyman took Race 2 in a split weekend. In 2024, Gillim and Wyman each took a win at COTA. The pattern suggests this track produces close, competitive racing rather than processions — which is exactly what Harley needs if they are going to keep the 2026 championship interesting.
Kyle Wyman has 25 career King of the Baggers race wins — the most in series history. He clinched the 2025 championship at COTA and has won here in both 2024 and 2025. If anyone can drag Harley back into this title fight, it is the defending champion on his favorite track.
Five Storylines to Watch
1. Can Indian clinch the manufacturer's title at COTA?
With Gillim and Herfoss sitting 1-2 and Tyler O'Hara in fifth, Indian Motorcycle holds a commanding position in the manufacturer's standings. A strong weekend at COTA could lock up the manufacturer's championship before the finale at NJMP, making the last round a coronation rather than a contest.
2. Wyman's COTA mastery
The defending champion has won at COTA in consecutive years. He is 80 points behind Gillim, which means the title is almost certainly out of reach — but a race win at his best track would salvage something from a difficult 2026 campaign. Wyman's season was derailed at Mid-Ohio when he crashed out of Race 1, and he has not won a race since Road America in Round 3.
3. The teammate dynamic
Gillim leads Herfoss by 23 points. They are teammates on the J&P Cycles/Motul/Vance & Hines Factory Indian team, sharing data, setup notes, and garage space. But with two rounds remaining, the gloves may come off. Herfoss has the pace to match Gillim — he won Race 2 at Daytona and finished second in both races at Mid-Ohio. If Gillim stumbles, Herfoss is right there to capitalize.
4. Smith's quiet consistency
Bradley Smith has been Harley's most consistent performer in 2026. The former MotoGP racer claimed his maiden KOTB win at Laguna Seca in Round 4 and has finished on the podium in four of the last six races. He is 54 points behind Gillim — a long shot, but if Indian has a bad weekend and Smith wins both races, the gap could shrink to as little as four points heading into the NJMP finale.
5. The Turn 1 uphill shoot-out
COTA's Turn 1 is the defining corner of the circuit. The 133-foot climb means riders approach it blind, braking uphill into a wide, sweeping apex. For the heavy baggers, this is where races are won and lost. Expect to see aggressive moves into Turn 1 on the opening lap of both races — particularly from riders starting behind the front row who need to make up ground quickly.
The Title Math
The MotoAmerica points system awards 25 points for a win, 21 for second, 19 for third, down through 1 point for 20th. With two races per round and two rounds remaining, there are 100 maximum points still on the table.
Here is what each contender needs at COTA:
Gillim (206 pts): A single podium finish at COTA mathematically eliminates O'Hara and Rispoli from title contention. If Gillim wins both races (50 pts) and Herfoss scores 40 or fewer, Gillim clinches the championship at COTA with a round to spare.
Herfoss (183 pts): Still very much in this. If he outscores Gillim at COTA by 12 or more points, the gap drops to single digits heading into NJMP. Herfoss needs to beat his teammate — something he has only done once this season (Daytona Race 2).
Smith (152 pts): Needs to outscore Gillim by 29 points across the remaining four races. That means winning both COTA races while Gillim finishes no better than fifth in both. Possible? Yes. Likely? No.
Wyman (126 pts): 80 points back with 100 remaining. Wyman needs to win all four remaining races AND have Gillim score 30 or fewer points total. The 2025 champion's title defense is effectively over unless something extraordinary happens.

MotoAmerica Superbikes at Texas runs a full three-day program at COTA. Five classes compete: Quad Lock Superbike, Supersport, Talent Cup, Mission King of the Baggers, and Mission Super Hooligan National Championship. The paddock is open to all ticket holders.

Most Atlantic Canada fans will fly, with Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) located about 15 minutes from the circuit. Kids under 12 get free admission.
