How Much Storage Does Video Editing Actually Need?
4K footage eats storage fast. 8K eats it faster. And if you edit daily like I do on two YouTube channels, your storage needs are different from a casual editor. Here is a practical guide to storage for video editing in 2026.

Why storage matters more than ever
Video file sizes have exploded. A single 4K video at 60fps in ProRes 422 takes approximately 6 GB per minute. A 10-minute clip is 60 GB. A day of shooting with multiple cameras can easily produce 500 GB to 1 TB of footage. 8K video at 30fps doubles that. If you edit daily, your storage needs compound quickly.

Internal vs external storage
Internal storage (your editing drive): This is where your active project files and current footage live. For video editing, this should be a fast SSD. The internal SSD on my Mac Studio M4 Max (my primary editing machine) reads at up to 5,000 MB/s, which handles 4K and 8K editing smoothly.
External storage (archive and scratch): This is where you keep finished projects, archived footage, and large raw files. External Thunderbolt SSDs (2,000-3,000 MB/s) are fast enough for editing directly. USB-C SSDs (1,000 MB/s) work for 4K but may stutter with 8K ProRes.
Recommendation: Keep at least 1 TB internal SSD for active projects. Use external SSDs for archive. Use HDDs (cheaper, slower) for long-term backup only — never edit directly from an HDD.

My editing setup: two channels, daily output
I run two YouTube channels (@gregtoope tech reviews and @gregtooperides motorcycle/travel) and edit daily on my Mac Studio M4 Max (primary) and M1 Max (secondary). Here is my actual storage setup:
- Internal SSD (1 TB): OS, apps, and current active project. Only one project at a time lives here.
- External Thunderbolt SSD (4 TB): Current month's raw footage and work-in-progress projects. This is my scratch disk for editing.
- External HDD (8 TB): Archive of finished projects, exported videos, and raw footage older than 3 months. Cheaper per TB, only accessed when I need old footage.
- Cloud backup (2 TB): Finished exports and important project files backed up to cloud storage. This is my off-site backup in case of hardware failure or theft.
Total storage: approximately 15 TB across all drives. This handles two channels with daily output, 4K editing, and 360 footage from the Insta360 X5.
Backup strategy: never lose footage
Footage is irreplaceable. If you lose raw footage from a trip or review, you cannot reshoot it. My backup rule: every important file exists in at least two locations:
- Active copy: On the editing SSD (fast access)
- Backup copy: On the archive HDD (cheap, large capacity)
- Critical exports: Also in cloud storage (off-site protection)
After finishing a project, I export the final video, move the raw footage to the archive HDD, and upload the export to YouTube and cloud storage. The internal SSD is cleared for the next project. This workflow keeps the editing drive fast and ensures nothing is lost.
