How Often Should You Check Motorcycle Tire Pressure?
Tire pressure is the most ignored and most important maintenance check on a motorcycle. Under-inflated tires handle poorly, wear faster, and can fail catastrophically. Here is how often to check, what pressure to run, and why cold pressure matters.

Why tire pressure matters more on a motorcycle
On a car, incorrect tire pressure means uneven wear and slightly worse fuel economy. On a motorcycle, incorrect tire pressure can mean the difference between staying upright and crashing. A motorcycle has two contact patches — each about the size of a credit card — connecting you to the road. If those contact patches are wrong because the pressure is off, your handling, braking, and stability all suffer.
Under-inflation causes the tire to flex more, generating excess heat. Heat degrades the rubber and can cause the tire to delaminate or blow out. Under-inflated tires also make the bike feel vague and unresponsive in corners, increase stopping distance, and wear the edges of the tread faster. Over-inflation reduces the contact patch, making the bike feel skittish and harsh, and wearing the center of the tread. Neither is good.
How often to check: the real answer
The short answer: check before every ride. The practical answer for most riders:
- Before every ride: A quick visual check (does the tire look flat?) and a physical pressure check with a gauge. Takes 30 seconds per tire. This is the gold standard and what I do on my Indian Pursuit.
- At minimum, once a week: If you ride daily, check at least once a week with a proper gauge. Tires lose 1-2 PSI per month through normal permeation (air slowly leaks through the rubber).
- Before any long trip: Check pressure cold the morning of your trip. Set it to the manufacturer specification for your load.
- After any significant temperature change: If the temperature drops 10 degrees C (18 degrees F) overnight, your tire pressure drops approximately 1-2 PSI. Check after seasonal transitions.
- After any rough road or impact: If you hit a pothole hard, check the pressure. An impact can unseat the bead or cause a slow leak.
Cold pressure vs hot pressure
Always check tire pressure when the tires are cold — meaning the bike has not been ridden for at least 3 hours, or ridden less than 3 km (2 mi) at low speed. This is because riding heats up the tires, and heat increases pressure. A tire that reads 36 PSI cold might read 40 PSI hot after 30 minutes of highway riding.
Manufacturer-recommended pressures are always cold pressures. If you check hot and get the recommended cold pressure, your cold pressure is actually too low. The rule: always check cold, always set cold.
If you must check when hot (e.g., at a gas station mid-ride), add 2-3 PSI to the reading to estimate cold pressure. For example, if the hot reading is 38 PSI and the recommended cold pressure is 36 PSI, the tire is approximately correct — the 2 PSI increase is from heat. If the hot reading is 36 PSI, your cold pressure is likely around 33-34 PSI, which is too low.
What pressure should you run?
Always start with the manufacturer's recommended pressure, which is found on a sticker on the swingarm, in the owner's manual, or sometimes inside the storage compartment. For the Indian Pursuit:

These are cold pressures. Adjust based on your specific bike model — check your owner's manual or the tire pressure sticker on your motorcycle.
If you run aftermarket tires, check the tire manufacturer's recommendation. Some tires have different pressure specifications than the bike manufacturer's numbers. When in doubt, use the bike manufacturer's number as the starting point and adjust based on feel and wear patterns.
How temperature affects pressure
Tire pressure changes approximately 1 PSI for every 10 degrees F (5.5 degrees C) change in ambient temperature. In Canada, this means:
- Summer to winter: A tire set to 40 PSI in July at 30 degrees C (86 degrees F) will read approximately 36 PSI in January at -10 degrees C (14 degrees F). That is a 4 PSI drop — enough to affect handling.
- Day to night: In spring and fall, a 15 degree C (27 degree F) temperature swing between day and night can change pressure by 2-3 PSI.
- Elevation: Pressure changes about 1 PSI per 300 m (1,000 ft) of elevation gain. If you set pressure at sea level and ride to 1,200 m (4,000 ft), your gauge reading increases by about 4 PSI — but the actual tire pressure relative to ambient has not changed much.
The practical takeaway: check your pressure more often during seasonal transitions (spring and fall) when temperature swings are largest.
TPMS: is it worth it?
A Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) uses sensors mounted on the valve stems (external) or inside the tire (internal) to display real-time pressure on a dashboard or phone. Benefits:
- Continuous monitoring — you see pressure changes in real time
- Early warning of slow leaks before they become dangerous
- Hot pressure monitoring — see how pressure changes during riding
- Cost: $50-$200 for a good external TPMS system (e.g., FOBO Tire, TireMinder)
For touring riders who cover long distances, a TPMS is a worthwhile safety investment. For daily commuters, regular manual checks are sufficient. My Indian Pursuit does not have built-in TPMS, so I check manually before every ride.
Signs your pressure is wrong
If you have not checked your pressure recently, watch for these signs:
- Heavy steering or vague handling: Front tire likely under-inflated
- Rear feels squirmy in corners: Rear tire likely under-inflated
- Harsh ride, skittish on bumps: Tire likely over-inflated
- Center wear on rear tire: Over-inflation (too much pressure reduces contact patch to center)
- Edge wear: Under-inflation (tire flexes too much, wears edges)
- Uneven wear side to side: Suspension issue or alignment, not just pressure
