Indian KOTB Mid-Ohio Sweep: Gillim Turns the Championship Into an Intra-Team Battle

Hayden Gillim won both King of the Baggers races at Mid-Ohio while both Harley factory riders crashed out of Race 1. With two rounds left, the title fight is now between two Indian teammates — and Harley's championship hopes are effectively over.

Race 1: Harley Disaster, Double Red Flag

Saturday's first championship race at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course will be remembered as one of the most chaotic King of the Baggers rounds in recent memory. The race was stopped not once but twice — both times because of crashes involving Harley-Davidson factory riders.

Defending champion Kyle Wyman launched strongly from the front row and led into the early laps. But on lap 2, his factory Road Glide developed a violent tank-slapper exiting Turn 13. Wyman was thrown from the bike, and the race was immediately red-flagged.

Then, before the restart could even get underway, Bradley Smith crashed his factory Road Glide during the sighting lap. The incident left oil on the circuit and damaged the air fence, forcing officials to throw a second red flag while they cleaned up the track.

Neither factory Harley rider was able to take part when the field finally returned to the grid for a third attempt. The race was reduced to a five-lap sprint, and it became a straightforward Indian benefit.

Hayden Gillim led from the restart and never looked back. Teammate Troy Herfoss slotted into second and stayed within a second through the opening four laps. On the final lap, Herfoss's pace dropped off, and Gillim crossed the line 3.301 seconds ahead.

Privateer Harley rider James Rispoli (Big Diehl x Harley-Davidson) salvaged third for the Harley camp, finishing 5.765 seconds behind Gillim and edging Indian's Rocco Landers by just 0.073 seconds.

Bagger Challenge: Herfoss Takes the $5,000

Before Race 1, the two-lap Mission King of the Baggers Challenge offered no championship points but put $5,000 on the line. Herfoss won the sprint in 2:56.609, defeating Wyman by 0.782 seconds and Gillim by 0.965 seconds. The top three were covered by less than a second.

It was a small consolation for what was about to unfold in the championship races.

Race 2: Gillim Charges From P6 to Win

Sunday's nine-lap Race 2 looked briefly like it might go Herfoss's way. The Australian made another strong start and led the field through the opening laps. Gillim, starting from pole, got a poor launch and dropped to sixth at the end of lap 1.

What followed was a methodical charge through the field that showcased why Gillim is the championship leader:

Lap 3: P4 (passed O'Hara)
Lap 4: P3 (passed Smith)
Lap 5: P2 (passed Wyman)

Gillim made the decisive move at Turn 1 with three laps remaining and held on to complete the sweep by 0.251 seconds. His best lap of 1:28.202 was just 0.019 seconds off Smith's race-fastest time.

Smith, riding with four broken ribs sustained in Saturday's sighting-lap crash, remarkably finished third — 3.129 seconds behind the winner. Wyman took fourth, and O'Hara rounded out the top five.

"After my crash in Superbike, I was riding a little angry and was able to make it happen," Gillim said after Race 2.

Championship Standings After Mid-Ohio

Gillim's perfect 50-point weekend extended his championship lead from 13 points (after Laguna Seca) back to 23 points. Herfoss's pair of second places earned him 40 points, keeping him within striking distance but firmly in second.

With a maximum of 100 points remaining across the final two rounds, any rider within 99 points of the lead is still mathematically eligible. That keeps the top six alive — but realistically, this is now a two-rider race between the Indian teammates.

Smith's broken ribs and Wyman's DNF in Race 1 effectively ended Harley's championship challenge. Even if Smith swept both remaining rounds (50 points) and Gillim scored zero, Smith would still trail by 4 points. For Wyman, the deficit is 80 points with only 100 on the table — he would need Gillim to score no more than 20 points across four races while winning all four himself.

The 2026 King of the Baggers championship concludes with two rounds:

For Gillim to clinch the title at COTA, he needs to leave Austin with at least a 50-point lead over Herfoss (since 50 points is the maximum available at NJMP). Currently at 23 points, that means outscoring Herfoss by at least 27 points across the two COTA races — essentially needing a win and a second, or two wins, while Herfoss finishes no better than third in both.

If Herfoss can keep the gap under 50 points heading to NJMP, the championship goes down to the final weekend.
